When you think of the world’s gay capitals (London! Miami! Berlin!) you probably don’t give too much thought to Copenhagen, the Danish capital. But after visiting the city with the #mygaypride gang to celebrate Copenhagen Pride, I’m happy to confirm that Copenhagen is actually a gay hotspot waiting to be discovered. Here are some of the reasons you should visit Copenhagen for its annual Pride events.

It’s dirtier than you think

Not as in dirty streets – Copenhagen is actually really clean – but in the sense that the local gay population is not averse to a bit of sleaze. Walk around the main centre and the predominantly gay street of Studiestræde and you will see sex shops and leather bars aplenty, as well as Copenhagen’s one and only gay sauna, Amigo. Those sweet looking Scandis have a dark side.

It’s cheaper than you think

I know what you’re thinking. But how can I actually enjoy my time in Copenhagen when everything there is so expensive? I was worried about that before making my way to the city, but it’s actually a lot more affordable than you would think. In comparison to Stockholm, your buck will take you to a lot more gay bars and put a lot more drinks down your neck in Copenhagen. In the centre of the action in Pride Square, I remember seeing cocktails on sale for just £4, which is cheap by any standards.

There’s tonnes of drag

If I were to do it all again, I’d be a drag queen. I love drag! The fun, the playfulness, the camp, and the silliness of it. And it turns out that Danes love it just as much as I do. So much so that on the Friday night, there was a 3 hour drag show with tonnes of performances! They even spent some cash on flying Violet Chachki, the winner of Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 7, to Copenhagen to delight the crowds.

The Pride parties are incredible

Like, incredible. On the Saturday night, the official Pride party at Pumpehuset was everything that I could have wanted from a big gay night out. As I walked through the door, Whitney’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ started playing, which then seamlessly synced up with Madonna’s ‘Vogue’. I danced until after 4am and I even took my shirt off in the club – ha!

Danish boys are hella hot

I don’t really have a type, but I’d probably say that if I did have a type, it would be be for dark, geeky looking guys. So that whole Viking thing doesn’t really fit the mould for me. But I am officially a convert. Danish boys are just plain cute. And also really lovely. In my mini Scandi break, I went to Copenhagen and Stockholm, and in Copenhagen the boys were hotter, friendlier, and more up for it!

And after all of that #mygaypride action, I conked out in the comfort of my room at the Andersen Hotel – perfect. Hotel Andersen

Big shout out to the #mygaypride gang for another awesome trip. Thanks to Scandinavian Airlines for flying me out, Eurail for my onward journey to Stockholm, the Andersen Hotel for putting me up, Gay Star News, the official media partners of the campaign, and AllDayInternet for a constant wifi connection.

And finally, make sure that you check out the Gay Copenhagen Facebook page before you visit the city to keep up to date with all the exciting LGBT stuff happening in the capital.

Until next year!
